With the announcement, Figure AI positions itself among a growing number of robotics firms seeking to make humanoid machines viable beyond research settings.

Advanced Sensing and Precision Engineering

At the centre of Figure 03’s innovation is a redesigned perception and control system aimed at improving dexterity and reliability. The robot is equipped with an entirely new camera array that offers a wider field of view, lower latency and higher frame rates. Cameras embedded in its palms allow continuous visual feedback even when the robot’s hands are obscured from its main sensors.

Each finger is fitted with tactile sensors capable of detecting minute variations in pressure, allowing Figure 03 to handle delicate objects without damage. These refinements support the company’s AI model, Helix, which interprets visual and sensory data to plan actions more fluidly. The result, according to Figure AI, is a system that can adapt more effectively to unstructured, everyday environments.

Designed for Domestic Safety and Comfort

Recognising that humanoid robots must coexist safely with people, Figure AI has redesigned the physical form of Figure 03 to be more compact and approachable. The robot is about nine per cent smaller and lighter than its predecessor, Figure 02, improving mobility in domestic spaces such as kitchens and corridors.

The outer shell uses soft, textile-like materials rather than rigid panels, while joint padding minimises pinch points and impact risks. A new multi-layer battery design, certified under UN38.3 standards, improves operational safety. Wireless inductive charging allows the robot to recharge autonomously by standing on a designated mat, reducing maintenance demands. Upgraded audio hardware and microphones support clearer two-way speech, aimed at making voice interaction feel more natural in a household or service context.

Building for Scale and Production Efficiency

Beyond technical refinements, Figure AI has focused on manufacturability, a critical challenge that has constrained humanoid robotics for decades. Nearly every major component in Figure 03 has been redesigned to reduce part count and simplify assembly. Processes such as die casting and injection moulding have replaced bespoke machining, cutting costs and improving consistency.

The company has also built a dedicated production facility, BotQ, intended to enable large-scale output. Figure AI says it will start with an annual capacity of 12,000 units, with plans to expand to 100,000 units within four years. The firm argues that this shift from one-off prototypes to standardised production is key to achieving affordability and market viability.

Expanding into Commercial and Service Markets

While much of the public attention centres on domestic applications, Figure 03 has been designed with commercial and industrial tasks in mind. Its enhanced sensing and modular build could make it suitable for logistics, hospitality and light manufacturing environments, where adaptability is more valuable than task-specific automation.

Wireless fleet charging, faster actuator response and interchangeable “uniforms”, specialised attachments for different roles, are part of the broader vision. Figure AI hopes this flexibility will allow companies to deploy humanoid robots as general assistants capable of learning new tasks rather than as narrowly programmed machines.

Balancing Promise with Practical Reality

Despite the optimism, questions remain about cost, reliability and readiness for widespread adoption. Figure AI has not disclosed pricing or endurance metrics for Figure 03, and most demonstrations so far have been controlled scenarios, showing the robot folding laundry, unloading a dishwasher or carrying items in a hotel setting.

Analysts note that moving from polished demonstrations to consistent real-world performance remains one of robotics’ greatest challenges. Energy efficiency, safety certification, software maintenance and customer support will all determine whether humanoid robots can achieve mainstream acceptance. The company also faces competition from established players pursuing similar visions of general-purpose robotics.
